To crop or not?
Throughout the month of January I followed the adventures of someone who challenged herself to wear only two pairs of pants for the whole month. The whole idea around this challenge was to dress for your workout and your day in basically the same clothing…or maybe it was something to do with being more environmentally conscious with your clothing habits. Whatever the purpose it was a cool idea and I did check in to see how she was doing each day. However, I think I was more intrigued by the following:
Both pairs of pants that she had to live in for an entire month were skin-tight legging type material and one was a crop pant. How was she going to be able to come up with multiple outfits that revolved around this look? She definitely pulled it off and by the end of the month I had convinced myself that I too needed a pair of wunder under crops for my workouts.
Slight problem, though.
I have hips and am not 6 feet tall. Could I really pull off this cropped, skin-tight legging look for my workouts? Doubtful.
But a girl can dream and maybe there is a pair of skin-tight workout crops that could work for me.
PS: I’m not delusional enough to think I could actually wear these for a full day outing…only for exercise.

The Run: Spirit Pullover
Loved wearing my latest Lululemon piece on this morning’s run. I saw it last week on another runner and knew I had to have it (she has the lilac). After finishing yesterday’s 5km race my very sweet boyfriend bought it for me. I’m feeling that this is going to be the perfect transition piece for Toronto’s weather – is thick enough to keep warm without having to put on another layer, has a hoodie, built in mittens and a very cute pattern on the back. I got the grey coloured one.
I was torn between this piece and a few others, but decided this one was the most practical for the coming winter months. That said maybe Santa will bring me this.

Grab some deals at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Health and Fitness expo
This weekend one of Toronto’s biggest running events will take place – the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront. This marathon is marketed as “Canada’s #1 big city marathon”. I have no clue how many people in total will be running, but I know that it will be busy. I also know that it will be a great weekend for picking up all sorts of goodies.
Even if you aren’t a runner head down to the expo and stock up on all sorts of goodies. There are usually some great deals to be had on shoes and clothing! You will also be able to pick up some samples of products like Clif bars and all sorts of sports nutrition type thing!
There will also be some fun exhibitors there and you may be able to pick up some Christmas stocking stuffers! Never too early to start! Last year I picked up some pairs of Dirty Girl undies which have some great slogans on them and are super comfortable! Perfect gifts for any runner in your life!
PS: If you have some time come cheer some of us runners on! I’ll be running the half marathon!

Customize your Lululemon
I’m a total sucker for customized products. Customized frangrances, foundations, powders, clothes…you name it and I’ll want it. For the past few months I have been dying to create my own NikeiD shoes - I can choose my colors, materials and add my own personal ID. I don’t think I know what a personal ID is, but I want it.
But today I have found out that one of my most beloved brands, Lululemon, is offering me the option of building my own customized Groove pants. I want to do this. Is too exciting. Only issue? The only Lulu lab for now is located in Vancouver.
I think it’s time to start booking a flight.

Yes, a sports bra can change your life
I have to admit I never really gave much thought to sports bras in the past. For most workouts I tended to just throw on a Lululemon tank top that had built-in support. I confess I even have run in a regular, no real support bra – I thought I could get away with this as I’m not the chestiest of people.
The only times I really wished I had a proper sports bra was when I wanted to wear one of the many race t-shirts I had acquired over the years.
But then this summer when I was coaching one of the For Women Only Running clinics at the Running Room I started to think more about why I didn’t even own a proper sports bra when we covered the topic in the clinic. Weird especially since I spend so much of my time doing high impact sports.
I had to do something about this.
Last week I went for a sports bra fitting with the founder of Secrets from Your Sister, a bra fitting store, in Toronto. The hour or so that I spent getting this fitting done I believe may have changed my life. I tried on a variety of sports bras, learned how to put a bra on (yes there is a right and a wrong way), learned I was wearing the wrong size and did jump tests to see how the bra would perform while bouncing around. I then even got to try on the bra with a tank to see how I looked – nice touch.
After trying on a number of bras I settled on the Shock Absorber bra and decided to test drive it on this Sunday’s 23 km run. Within 10 minutes of running I knew that this bra was going to work for me. It fit perfectly and offered the right amount of support during the run. As I mentioned I’m not the chestiest of people, but even I noticed a difference in the amount of bouncing that I no longer did. I also can attest to the fact that this bra held up well during torrential rain (unlike my drowned iPhone – never take an iPhone on a workout.)
The one thing I was concerned about with this bra was armpit chafing. I was a little concerned about the tightness in the arm area, but nothing ever happened.
I am now obsessed with asking friends how they put on their bras and also obsessed with looking at runner women’s chest. So many of them have chests that are all over the place that I almost feel like going up to them and saying -
“Please go get a fitting at Secrets from Your Sister.”
Secrets from Your Sister has multiple locations in Toronto. To organize a fitting please visit their website for contact information.
